lb7 or lly

how can you tell which is which and what should I be looking out for in the two. I am looking at a 2004 dmax and i dont know if its an early 04 or a late 04 any help would by great thanks

Thread is dead but for other views. 8th digit of the vin tells the engine.
1=lb7, 2=lly, d=lbz, and I forget the rest
